The Twisp Family Planning Clinic has been operating at Room One for 15 years. With our community's support we successfully connected Methow Valley youth, women and men with access to safe, affordable birth control, STD testing, well woman-care, and knowledgeable referrals, regardless of their ability to pay. Family planning resources have changed in recent years and as a result the clinic's administrating organization, Family Planning of North Central Washington, decided to close the doors of the Twisp Clinic on January 1st.
We hope, like us, you are proud of our community's role in keeping this clinic open when it was a truly vital resource. When asked what they valued most about the clinic in 2014, clients said:
"The people, how warm and welcoming everyone was"
“I can talk openly without judgment"
“The experienced staff and feeling like they really care”
Although many current clients will be able to access reproductive health care from their primary provider, research and years of experience tell us that some of our neighbors will be vulnerable to slipping through the cracks. Our county has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the state; we have to continue to strategically and thoroughly support the continuum of family planning services. To that end, Room One is approaching this change as a transition, rather than a closure.
We will continue to offer important services, including referrals and Plan B, that bridge the gap for clients needing family planning services. We will also help to build the capacity of local health clinics to effectively meet the reproductive health needs of teens and vulnerable adults.
We are confident that our strong partnerships, creative programming, and the courageous voices of our community members will allow us to continue leading rural communities in getting upstream of teen pregnancy and empowering their neighbors.
