A year ago we committed to investing deeply in young families. In partnership with Little Star Montessori school and Twispworks, we opened a beautiful year-round childcare in Twisp, with over two-thirds of its children offered a sliding scale tuition to meet their family’s financial needs. We knew that prioritizing quality, affordable childcare would immediately benefit our community by reducing the often mounting stressors young families face and allowing parents to work. But it would also positively impact our community far into the future: when young children have quality early child care they are less likely to be involved in other costly systems in the future, and far more likely to thrive across their lifetime.
At the same time, we knew that many of our neighbors with young children needed more than just child care, they needed us to show up with focused support. So Room One created our Strengthening Families program, working intensively with young families to find resources that mattered to them, like housing and work, treatment for addiction, legal support, or a safe place to practice new skills. One year later, families working with Room One’s Family Advocate are gaining new footing on their path to wellbeing. As one mom recently noted, we are in this together:
"I know you are on my side even when I get overwhelmed with everything and want to run away. Thank you for still helping me."
