Continuing an important strategy in our county-wide teen pregnancy prevention work, Room One's Okanogan Healthy Youth (OHY) staff recently held a Teacher Training Summit for Sexual Health Education in Omak. With support from beloved Room One staffer Eve Russell, the summit provided Okanogan County school teachers, counselors, and nurses with hands-on tools to implement the best practices of comprehensive sexual health education and the foundation for a local peer-support network. Participants explored how to bring trauma-informed practices to the curricula, practice inclusivity, and best engage youth in the sensitive topic of sexual health. They shared challenges, laughter, and successes, and agreed that the summit strengthened their important work:
“This was awesome & improved my confidence!"
“I’m ready to do a condom demo & answer questions from youth."
“The most important part of this training for me is the confidence that I feel to continue doing what I do for students.”
Room One will host this annual summit for educators again next year!
