Although the school year is coming to an end, our Youth Leadership Council (YLC) is in full swing and making moves for the summer. Our Council includes 20 motivated teens who are spreading the word about the importance of access to reproductive healthcare and our county’s need for comprehensive sexual health education in our schools. This summer our YLC is increasing their visibility so their peers know they can ask them questions about sexual health and local community resources that are safe and supportive for teens. We asked these incredible young people, “Why are you motivated to be a YLC member?” and they reminded us of the power of our Okanogan youth:
“Because I want to be able to educate other people in the community and overall make it a better/safer place”
“I want to make a change in my community and I want to be educated about sex and LGBTQ issues”
“The goals of the YLC really hit home. My best friend is pregnant and I see youth struggling and don’t like it”
“I want to have the info and resources available to help someone who needs it"
The commitment and courage of these teens to make change in their community is inspiration to all of us at Room One. Keep an eye out for the YLC on social media (check out their new Tea with YLC on Facebook!) and at summertime community events!
