(July News) This is a special year for Room One. Instead of hosting a Soup Dinner in the fall (as we have for more than a decade!), we have moved our annual 'Big Event' to February 29th, 2020. As you see from this newsletter, the community and collective safety net that extends from Room One is vital for all of us. Our former Board Vice President Ken Westman made “neighboring” a verb. He taught us that creating a community where all people can thrive truly takes all of us. Drawing from Ken's wisdom and the wisdom of so many others who form Room One, we chose the slogan “together, we raise the tides and lift EVERY boat” for our 2019 annual campaign (arriving in mailboxes this month). Here's what one of our weekly office volunteers had to say about the meaning of these words:
“Just as the phases of the moon affect the ocean tides, so are the phases of one’s life affected by circumstance. And when a low ebb comes, be it temporary or more lasting, Room One is there for everyone. It might be temporary financial help, as with a power bill, or eviction funds, or food assistance; it might be help in navigating the health plan finder or other state programs online; or it could be just a cup of tea and a sympathetic ear. But above all, when someone walks through our doors, they know they will be listened to, respected, and their burden will be a little lighter, knowing there is someone who cares about them.”
This work is only possible with your help. If now is a good time to give, check your mailbox or check out our donation page anytime. And thank you dear neighbors!
